Our Story

It began in 1998. With absolutely no understanding of the industry, 10,000 t-shirts were impulsively bought from a clearance auction outside of Burleigh Heads. “These T-Shirts seem cheap - surely we can do something with this.” That idea morphed into driving up and down the east coast of Australia, selling the t-shirts out of a van to travellers spending the night at backpackers. It was a terrible investment but a lot of fun. Tank Stream Design was born.

We had, after all, grown up living along the astonishing beauty of Australia’s coast. This was a way to fuel our love for freedom, travel and to experience a lifestyle rooted in nature. It allowed the adventure to continue (and not get a “real job”!) and to share it with others making their own. Life was uncomplicated but everything we did was based on a love and appreciation for quality and design. We were inspired by nature and had the Australian coast to explore. We felt lucky then. We still do today.

As we grew, it was always more organic than planned, just like the original t-shirt idea. We followed our hearts but were driven by the same unique set of beliefs. Our curiosity, and our love of life and nature inspired our design intent to be organic, artistic and hand drawn.
Today we’re around the world, still inspired by our beautiful coast, the rugged wilderness, and the need to venture out. As our founder, and original 10,000 t-shirt buyer, James Neumann says, “You just get up and go and do it”.
